Definition

A HYROX® competition is an organized indoor fitness race where athletes complete 8 x 1 km runs alternated with 8 functional workout stations, competing for the fastest overall time. HYROX® events are held in large indoor venues (exhibition halls, arenas) in cities worldwide, with standardized distances and weights across every event.

How It Works

Each HYROX® competition follows an identical format:

  1. Athletes start in timed waves of 50-200 participants.
  2. Each wave runs 1 km on a marked indoor course, then enters the Roxzone to complete station 1 (SkiErg).
  3. This pattern repeats for all 8 stations in order.
  4. Chip timing records split times for every segment.
  5. Results are published online and ranked by division, gender, and age group.

Competitions offer multiple divisions: Open (standard weights), Pro (heavier weights), Elite 15 (heaviest weights, qualification required), Doubles (teams of two), and Relay (teams of four).

Rules & Regulations

  • All athletes in a wave start simultaneously.
  • Station loads and distances are fixed by division and gender - no modifications.
  • Athletes must complete each station before proceeding; skipping results in disqualification.
  • External pacing assistance (e.g., running alongside a non-participant) is not permitted.
  • Official HYROX® equipment is provided at every station - athletes do not bring their own.

Why It Matters

HYROX® is the world's largest mass-participation fitness race series, with over 250,000 participants annually across 30+ cities. The standardized format means every athlete's time is directly comparable worldwide, creating a global leaderboard and a clear progression system from local events to regional championships to the World Championship.

Tips & Strategy

  1. Know your wave time - arrive 60-90 minutes early for check-in and warm-up.
  2. Wear race-specific shoes - a versatile cross-training shoe with moderate cushion and grip works best for both running and stations.
  3. Bring chalk - for Sled Pull and Farmers Carry. Most venues permit chalk.
  4. Study the venue map - know the Roxzone layout and transition routes before your wave starts.
  5. Race your plan, not other athletes - starting too fast to keep up with a faster athlete is the most common competition mistake.
