Sub-categories within HYROX divisions that rank athletes against others in their age bracket (e.g., 30-34, 35-39).

Age Group is a classification system within HYROX that ranks athletes against others in their age bracket rather than against the entire field. Available across Open, Pro, and team divisions, age groups provide separate leaderboards and podiums for brackets ranging from under-24 to 60+.

Definition

Age Group is a classification system within HYROX® that ranks athletes against others in their age bracket rather than against the entire field. Available across HYROX® Open, HYROX® Pro, and team divisions, age groups allow athletes to compete for podium positions and rankings against peers of similar age. The system ensures that a 45-year-old athlete is measured against other 45-49 year olds, not against 25-year-old competitors.

Requirements & Standards

Age groups are determined by the athlete's age on race day. The divisions and weight standards remain the same as the base division -- age group classification only affects the leaderboard and podium rankings.

24 and under Open, Pro Same as division standard Youngest bracket

Key points:

  • Station weights, distances, and rep counts are identical to the base division. A 50-year-old in Open Men still pushes a 152 kg sled and completes 100 wall ball reps with a 9 kg ball.
  • Age group is automatically assigned based on the birthdate in your registration. No separate sign-up is required.
  • Age group rankings are maintained on the official HYROX® results platform and contribute to season results and world championship qualification.

Who It's For

Age group competition is ideal for:

  • Masters athletes (40+): Athletes who are competitive within their age cohort but may not match the absolute times of younger competitors. Age grouping provides meaningful competition and recognition.
  • Long-term HYROX® participants: Athletes who have been racing for multiple seasons and want to track their ranking against a relevant peer group as they age.
  • Goal-oriented athletes: Anyone who wants a realistic podium target. Finishing top 3 in your age group at a local event is an achievable and motivating goal.
  • All experience levels: Whether you are running your first HYROX® or your fifteenth, age group provides context for your overall time.

Typical finish times vary by age bracket but generally follow the same patterns as the base division: Open athletes finish in 80-100 minutes, with times gradually increasing in older brackets.

HYROX® Context

Age group competition has become increasingly important as HYROX® has grown. With over 100,000 athletes participating globally, the overall leaderboard spans a wide range of fitness levels and ages. Age grouping provides a more meaningful competitive framework.

At the HYROX® World Championships, age group podiums are awarded separately, giving masters athletes a pathway to world-level recognition. Qualification for World Championships can be achieved through age group placement at qualifying events.

The 40+ and 50+ brackets are among the fastest-growing segments of HYROX® participation, reflecting the sport's appeal to lifelong athletes who value structured competition. Many of these athletes come from marathon running, CrossFit, or triathlon backgrounds and find HYROX®'s combination of running and functional fitness a natural fit.

FAQ

Do I need to register separately for an age group? No. Age group classification is automatic based on the birthdate you provide during registration. Your results will appear on both the overall leaderboard and your specific age group leaderboard.

Are the weights or distances different for older age groups? No. Station weights, distances, and rep counts are identical across all age groups within a given division. A 55-year-old Open Men athlete faces the same 152 kg sled push and 100 wall ball reps as a 25-year-old in Open Men.

Can I qualify for World Championships through my age group? Yes. Age group results count toward World Championship qualification. Podium finishes and fast times within your age bracket can earn a qualification slot, and separate age group podiums are awarded at Worlds.
