Hyrox Rules: Complete Guide
The complete set of competition rules governing a HYROX race, including station standards, movement requirements, penalty loop criteria, and disqualification conditions.
Definition
HYROX® rules are the official competition standards that govern every aspect of a HYROX® race - from station movement requirements to penalties, equipment usage, and disqualification criteria. Understanding the rules before race day prevents costly no-reps, penalty loops, and potential disqualification.
How It Works
Every HYROX® event follows a standardised ruleset enforced by trained station judges. Athletes complete 8 × 1 km runs alternating with 8 workout stations. Each station has specific movement standards that must be met for reps to count. Judges monitor form in real time and call no-reps immediately when standards are not met.
General Race Rules
- Athletes must complete stations in the prescribed order. Skipping or reordering is not permitted.
- Each 1 km run must be completed on the designated running course before entering the next station.
- Timing chips must be worn at all times. Crossing timing mats without a chip results in missing split data.
- Athletes must stay within marked lanes and course boundaries at all stations.
- Outside assistance (coaching, pacing, physical help) during the race is not permitted in most divisions.
Station Movement Standards
| Station | Key Standards |
|---|---|
| SkiErg | Full 1,000 m must register on monitor |
| Sled Push | Sled must fully cross finish line; push only (no pulling) |
| Sled Pull | Hand-over-hand only; no wrapping rope around body |
| Burpee Broad Jumps | Chest to floor on each burpee; feet together on each landing |
| Rowing | Full 1,000 m on Concept2; monitor must show 0 m |
| Farmers Carry | Both kettlebells carried simultaneously at sides |
| Sandbag Lunges | Back knee to ground; sandbag on shoulder only |
| Wall Balls | Below parallel squat; ball at or above target line |
Penalties & Disqualification
- No-rep: If a rep does not meet standards, the judge calls it immediately and the athlete must redo it.
- Penalty loop: At certain stations (primarily burpee broad jumps), consistent failure to meet standards may result in a penalty loop - an additional distance that must be run before continuing.
- Disqualification (DQ): Cutting the running course, receiving outside assistance, or repeatedly ignoring judge instructions can lead to disqualification.
- Time cap: Athletes who exceed the event time cap are removed from the course but typically receive a recorded time.
Why It Matters
Every no-rep adds 5-10 seconds to your station time. A penalty loop costs 60-90 seconds. A DQ means your entire race is void. Athletes who study the rules and practise to standard in training eliminate these risks and race with confidence.
FAQ
What happens if you get a no-rep in HYROX®? The judge calls the no-rep immediately, and you must redo that rep. It does not count toward your total until it meets the standard.
Can you be disqualified from HYROX®? Yes. Cutting the course, receiving outside assistance, or repeatedly failing to follow judge instructions can result in disqualification.
Are the rules the same at every HYROX® event? Yes. HYROX® uses a globally standardised ruleset. Rules are identical whether you race in London, Dubai, or Chicago.
