Prowler Sled
The Prowler sled is a training sled with upright push handles and weight posts. It is the closest commercial equivalent to the HYROX competition sled and the most specific training tool for Sled Push and Sled Pull race preparation.
Definition
The Prowler sled is a training sled with upright push handles and low horizontal handles, designed for pushing, pulling, and dragging exercises. It is the closest commercially available training tool to the official HYROX® competition sled and is the go-to piece of equipment for athletes preparing for the Sled Push and Sled Pull stations at home or in a gym.

How It Is Used in HYROX®
The Prowler sled is not the official HYROX® competition sled but is the best training substitute:
- Sled Push simulation - load the Prowler to race weight (152 kg men / 102 kg women total) and push 50 m on turf to replicate Station 3.
- Sled Pull training - attach a rope to the Prowler and practise 50 m hand-over-hand pulls for Station 4.
- Sled drags - attach a harness and drag the sled backward or laterally for posterior chain and hip conditioning.
- Conditioning finishers - light Prowler pushes (50-70 % race weight) for 4-6 x 50 m with short rest build HYROX®-specific metabolic conditioning.
- Warm-up - empty or lightly loaded Prowler pushes activate the legs and cardiovascular system before a session.
Home Gym Alternatives
- DIY tyre sled - bolt handles to an old tyre, load with weight plates.
- Heavy resistance band walks - loop a band around your waist and push against resistance for a sled-push feel.
- Weighted wheelbarrow push - load a wheelbarrow with sandbags for an improvised pushing exercise.
- Wall pushes (isometric) - push against a wall for timed sets to build leg drive endurance, though this lacks the dynamic component.
- Hill sprints - replicate the leg drive angle and cardiovascular demand of sled pushing.
HYROX® Context
Training with a Prowler sled is the single most specific preparation for the hardest HYROX® stations. The key training principle is to practise at or above race weight on a surface with similar friction to HYROX® turf. Gym floors are typically much smoother than HYROX® venue turf, so athletes training indoors should add 10-20 % to their target load to compensate. Train sled push and pull 2x per week during build phases, tapering to 1x in the final two weeks before race day.
FAQ
What is the difference between a Prowler sled and the HYROX® competition sled? The Prowler is a commercial training sled with a wider base and different handle geometry. The HYROX® sled is custom-built for the event. The movement pattern is very similar, but turf friction and handle feel vary. Training on a Prowler at race weight provides excellent preparation.
What surface should I push the Prowler on? Artificial turf is ideal. Grass works well. Concrete requires metal skid plates to avoid damaging the sled. Avoid rubber gym flooring - it creates too much friction and is unrealistic.
How much should I load the Prowler for training? Train at race weight (152 kg total for men, 102 kg for women) for specificity. For conditioning, use 60-80 % of race weight with shorter rest periods.
