Hyrox Wall Ball Target Height
The wall ball target height in HYROX: 2.7m for women and 2.8m for men, marked on the wall. The ball must hit at or above the line for each rep to count.
Definition
The HYROX® wall ball target height is the marked line on the wall that the medicine ball must reach on every rep for it to count. Target heights differ by division and gender, and hitting below the line results in a no-rep from the station judge.
How It Works
Each wall ball lane has a horizontal line painted or taped on the wall at the prescribed height. During wall balls, athletes throw the medicine ball from a full squat position and it must contact the wall at or above this line. A station judge watches every rep and calls no-reps immediately if the ball falls short.
Target Height by Division
| Division | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Open | 2.7 m | 2.7 m |
| Pro | 3.0 m | 2.7 m |
| Elite 15 | 3.0 m | 2.7 m |
In the Open division, men throw to 3.0 m and women throw to 2.7 m. Pro and Elite 15 men must throw 30 cm higher to 3.0 m, while women maintain 2.7 m across all divisions.
Rules & Regulations
- The ball must contact the wall at or above the marked target line for the rep to count.
- Glancing contact at the line counts - the ball does not need to go over the line, just reach it.
- The judge calls "no-rep" immediately for any ball that falls short.
- No-repped throws must be repeated; they do not count toward the total.
- There is no penalty loop for wall ball failures - you simply redo the rep.
Why It Matters
Consistently hitting the target height is a technique issue as much as a strength issue. Athletes who train with an unmarked wall or a lower target develop a throwing pattern that falls short on race day, leading to accumulating no-reps that waste energy and time. The 30 cm difference between 2.7 m and 3.0 m for Pro men requires noticeably more explosive hip drive.
Tips & Strategy
- Mark your training wall. Use tape to mark 2.7 m and 3.0 m so you always train to the correct height.
- Aim 10 cm above the line. Building a small margin into every throw prevents borderline no-reps.
- Drive from your hips. The target height is reached through hip extension power, not arm strength - treat it like a thruster.
- Stand close to the wall. Being 30-50 cm away reduces the horizontal component of the throw, making it easier to reach the height.
- Practise when fatigued. Wall ball accuracy drops when tired, so train throws after running to simulate race conditions.
