Definition

HYROX® Animal is a tiered ranking system that categorizes HYROX® finishers into animal-themed performance levels based on their total race time. Originating from the HYROX® community, the system assigns badges - from entry-level tiers up to the coveted "Apex Predator" designation - giving athletes clear benchmarks to chase beyond a simple finish time.

How It's Calculated

Animal tiers are determined by your official HYROX® finish time in the Open or Pro individual division. The thresholds differ by gender:

Tier Men (Open) Women (Open)
Sloth > 120 min > 130 min
Koala 100-120 min 110-130 min
Bear 85-100 min 95-110 min
Wolf 75-85 min 85-95 min
Panther 68-75 min 78-85 min
Lion 62-68 min 72-78 min
Apex Predator < 62 min < 72 min

Thresholds are approximate and vary by community source. HYROX® does not publish official animal tiers.

What Affects It

Your animal tier is a direct reflection of your total finish time, shaped by:

  • Running pace - the single biggest lever for moving up tiers
  • Station speed - efficient technique at all 8 stations
  • Transition discipline - minimizing time in the Roxzone between stations
  • Race-day execution - pacing strategy, nutrition, and mental resilience

HYROX® Benchmarks

Tier % of Finishers (est.)
Sloth ~25 %
Koala ~30 %
Bear ~25 %
Wolf ~12 %
Panther ~5 %
Lion ~2 %
Apex Predator < 1 %

How to Improve

Moving up one tier typically requires shaving 10-15 minutes off your total time. Target these areas:

  1. Drop your running splits - even 10 sec/km faster across 8 km saves 80 seconds.
  2. Eliminate rest at stations - keep moving through Wall Balls and lunges.
  3. Train transitions - practice entering a station and starting immediately.
  4. Race more often - experience reduces hesitation and improves pacing instincts.

FAQ

Is HYROX® Animal an official HYROX® ranking? No. It is a community-created tier system. However, it is widely referenced by athletes and training clubs as a motivational benchmark.

What animal tier should a first-time racer aim for? Most first-timers land in the Sloth or Koala tier. Targeting Bear on your second race is an ambitious but achievable goal with structured HYROX® training.

Do animal tiers apply to Doubles or Relay? The system was designed for individual races. Some communities have adapted thresholds for Doubles, but there is no standard.
