Definition

HYROX® age groups and divisions are the classification system that organises athletes by competition level (Open, Pro, Elite 15) and age bracket for ranking purposes. Age groups ensure athletes are ranked against peers of similar age, while divisions determine the station weights and qualification requirements.

How It Works

Every HYROX® athlete selects a division when registering for a race. Divisions determine what weights you lift. Within each division, athletes are further classified by age group for ranking and leaderboard placement. Your age group is determined by your age on race day.

HYROX® Divisions

Open Entry-level. Lighter weights. No qualifying time needed. No
Pro Intermediate. Heavier weights. No qualifying time needed. No
Elite 15 Top tier. Same weights as Pro. Requires qualifying time. Yes
Doubles Two-person teams. Alternate stations. No (except Elite)
Relay Four-person teams. Each member does 2 stations + 2 runs. No

Age Group Brackets

Age Group Age Range
16-24 Athletes aged 16 to 24
25-29 Athletes aged 25 to 29
30-34 Athletes aged 30 to 34
35-39 Athletes aged 35 to 39
40-44 Athletes aged 40 to 44
45-49 Athletes aged 45 to 49
50-54 Athletes aged 50 to 54
55-59 Athletes aged 55 to 59
60+ Athletes aged 60 and older

Age groups apply within each division. For example, a 42-year-old woman racing in Open is ranked in the "Women Open 40-44" category.

Rules & Regulations

  • Age group is determined by your age on race day, not your age at registration.
  • You can enter any division regardless of age - a 50-year-old can race in Open or Pro.
  • Elite 15 requires a qualifying time from a previous HYROX® event within the current season.
  • In Doubles, the team's age group is based on the older partner's age.
  • Athletes compete against all participants for overall placement and against their age group for age-group ranking.

Why It Matters

Choosing the right division is one of the most important decisions a HYROX® athlete makes. Open provides a manageable entry point, Pro challenges athletes with significantly heavier weights, and Elite 15 is reserved for the fastest competitors. Age group ranking adds an additional layer of competition that motivates athletes across all fitness levels, since you are always compared to peers your own age.

Tips & Strategy

  • Start in Open. If it is your first HYROX®, Open weights let you focus on learning the format and pacing.
  • Move to Pro when ready. If you finish Open comfortably and want a greater challenge, Pro weights represent a significant step up.
  • Target your age group. Even if you will not win overall, competing for an age-group podium is motivating and achievable.
  • Check Elite 15 qualifying times. They vary by gender and age group - check the HYROX® website for current season standards.
