Definition

A HYROX® race is a single event in the global HYROX® series, held at an indoor venue where athletes compete in the standardized 8-run, 8-station format across multiple divisions. Each race weekend typically hosts thousands of participants in timed waves, with results feeding into seasonal rankings and World Championship qualification.

How It Works

A HYROX® race unfolds in timed waves throughout the day:

  1. Check-in - athletes arrive 60-90 minutes before their wave, collect their bib and timing chip, and drop off bags.
  2. Warm-up - a dedicated warm-up area is available inside the venue.
  3. Wave start - 50-200 athletes begin simultaneously. The clock starts for everyone in the wave.
  4. Race - athletes complete 8 x 1 km runs alternated with 8 stations in order. All movement occurs on a marked indoor course.
  5. Finish - crossing the final mat stops the clock. Split times are recorded for every segment.
  6. Results - published online within hours, ranked by division, gender, and age group.

Rules & Regulations

  • Athletes must wear their bib and timing chip at all times.
  • Cutting the running course results in disqualification.
  • Station weights and distances are pre-set - athletes cannot adjust them.
  • Athletes in the wrong division (e.g., using Open weights when registered for Pro) are disqualified.
  • Official race photos and results are available via the HYROX® app and website.

Why It Matters

Each HYROX® race is identical in format, making it the only mass-participation fitness event where times are directly comparable across all venues and dates. This standardization creates a year-round competitive ecosystem: athletes can race multiple times per season, track improvement, and qualify for the World Championship based on their fastest time at any sanctioned event.

Tips & Strategy

  1. Register early - popular wave times (mid-morning) sell out fast. Early registration also secures lower prices.
  2. Scout the venue - if possible, arrive the day before to walk the course and locate the Roxzone, water stations, and bag drop.
  3. Prepare your race kit - shoes, chalk, gels, race belt, and bib pins. Pack everything the night before.
  4. Have a pacing plan - write target split times on your forearm or wrist to reference during the race.
  5. Enjoy the atmosphere - HYROX® races have a festival energy with music, spectator zones, and vendor areas. The environment lifts performance.

FAQ

How long does a HYROX® race take? The average finish time ranges from 60 minutes (elite) to 120+ minutes (beginners). Most Open athletes finish in 80-100 minutes.

Can I do more than one HYROX® race per season? Yes. Many athletes race 2-4 times per season to improve their times and qualify for championships.

What should I wear to a HYROX® race? Cross-training shoes with moderate cushion and grip, moisture-wicking athletic clothing, and a race belt if carrying gels. Avoid pure running shoes - they lack grip for sled work.
