Who It's For

  • First-time HYROX® athletes: The lighter weights and open registration make this the ideal starting division.
  • Recreational fitness enthusiasts: Gym-goers, runners, and functional fitness athletes who want a structured competitive goal.
  • Athletes testing the format: Experienced athletes from other sports (marathon, triathlon, CrossFit) who want to experience HYROX® before potentially moving to Pro.
  • All fitness levels: Open attracts everyone from dedicated competitors aiming for sub-70-minute finishes to first-timers targeting completion.

Typical Open finish times: Men 75-100 minutes, Women 80-110 minutes. Competitive Open athletes finish in 65-80 minutes. First-timers often finish in 90-120 minutes.

HYROX® Context

HYROX® Open is the backbone of the sport. It accounts for the largest share of registrations at every event and is the division that has driven HYROX®'s explosive growth from a few hundred participants in 2017 to over 100,000 globally.

The Open division creates a clear progression pathway:

Doubles (team intro) --> Open (individual entry) --> Pro (heavier weights, qualification needed) --> Elite (top tier)

Many athletes race Open multiple times before considering Pro, using each race to improve their overall time, refine their pacing strategy, and identify which stations need the most training. The station split data from Open races is invaluable for targeted improvement.

At major events, Open waves run throughout the day, creating a vibrant atmosphere with continuous racing from early morning to evening. The Roxzone -- the spectator area around the final stations -- is typically at peak energy during the busiest Open waves.

FAQ

Do I need to qualify for HYROX® Open? No. HYROX® Open has no qualification requirement. Anyone can register through the official HYROX® website by selecting the Open division for their chosen event.

What is a good Open finish time for a beginner? Finishing is the first goal. Most first-time athletes complete HYROX® Open in 90-120 minutes. A sub-90-minute finish is strong for a beginner, and sub-75 minutes is competitive.

When should I move from Open to Pro? Consider HYROX® Pro when you can consistently finish Open in under 75 minutes (men) or under 85 minutes (women) and feel confident handling heavier weights. Many athletes race Open 2-3 times before moving up.
