Wave Start
A Wave Start is the staggered starting system at HYROX events where groups of athletes begin the race at scheduled intervals. Waves manage venue capacity and ensure fair, individual chip-timed results.
Definition
A Wave Start is the staggered starting system used at HYROX® events where groups of athletes begin the race at scheduled intervals throughout the day. Rather than starting all athletes simultaneously, waves are released every few minutes, managing venue capacity and ensuring manageable traffic on running lanes and at workout stations. Athletes select their preferred wave time during registration.
How It Works
Wave starts structure the flow of a HYROX® event:
- Wave scheduling: Waves are scheduled throughout the race day, typically from early morning to afternoon, with start times every 5-15 minutes
- Wave size: Each wave contains a set number of athletes, typically 50-200 depending on venue capacity
- Division grouping: Waves are often organized by division (Open, Pro, Elite, Doubles), so athletes compete alongside others in their category
- Rolling start: Within each wave, athletes are typically released using a rolling start format at short intervals
- Check-in: Athletes must check in at the start corral before their wave time, usually after completing the race briefing
Wave selection happens during event registration. Popular time slots (mid-morning waves) tend to fill up first. Earlier and later waves may offer advantages depending on athlete preferences.
Rules & Regulations
- Athletes must start in their assigned wave. Starting with a different wave without authorization results in disqualification.
- Wave times are final once assigned. Transfers between waves may be possible through the event organizer but are not guaranteed.
- Athletes must arrive at the start corral before their wave time. Late arrivals may not be permitted to start.
- Each wave has a fixed capacity. Once a wave is full during registration, it is closed.
- All athletes within a wave share the course simultaneously, though individual chip timing ensures independent results.
Why It Matters for HYROX® Athletes
- Course management. Waves control the number of athletes on the course at any time, reducing congestion at stations and on running lanes.
- Fair competition. Athletes in the same wave race under similar conditions - same crowd energy, same venue temperature, same time of day.
- Scheduling flexibility. Athletes can choose wave times that align with their travel plans, warm-up preferences, and peak performance time of day.
- Competitive dynamics. In Pro and Elite waves, athletes start together, creating head-to-head racing dynamics that push faster times.
Tips & Strategy
- Choose your wave strategically. If you perform best in the morning, select an early wave. If you need time to eat and warm up, a mid-morning wave may suit you better.
- Consider crowd energy. Mid-day waves often have the largest spectator presence in the Roxzone, which can boost your performance. Early and late waves may have lighter crowds.
- Arrive well before your wave. Give yourself at least 45-60 minutes before your wave start to check in, collect your race bib, use the warm-up area, and attend the race briefing.
- Register early for preferred times. Popular waves sell out quickly. Register as soon as registration opens to secure your ideal start time.
- Race with your peers. If possible, choose a wave where athletes of similar ability are starting. Racing against comparable competition drives better performance.
FAQ
Can I change my wave after registration? Wave changes may be possible by contacting the event organizer, but availability is not guaranteed. Changes are easier the further out from the event.
Does my wave time affect my result? No. Individual chip timing ensures that your overall time is independent of when your wave started. Your result reflects only your individual effort from chip start to finish line crossing.
How many athletes are in each wave? Wave sizes vary by venue, typically ranging from 50 to 200 athletes. Larger venues accommodate bigger waves, while smaller venues run more frequent, smaller waves.
