Definition
HYROX® Doubles is a team format where two athletes complete a HYROX® race together, alternating between running segments and workout stations. Each partner takes turns -- one runs while the other waits, then they switch at each station. Both athletes must complete all 8 km of running (alternating 1 km segments), and the 8 workout stations are divided between the pair. It is the most popular team format in HYROX® and serves as an accessible entry point for athletes new to the sport.
Requirements & Standards
Doubles uses the same station weights as the HYROX® Open individual division. The workload is shared between two athletes.
| Station | Men's Doubles | Women's Doubles | How Work Is Split |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 km Running (x8) | 8 x 1 km total | 8 x 1 km total | Alternating: each partner runs 4 x 1 km |
| SkiErg | 1,000m | 1,000m | Split between partners |
| Sled Push | 152 kg, 50m | 102 kg, 50m | Split between partners |
| Sled Pull | 103 kg, 50m | 78 kg, 50m | Split between partners |
| Burpee Broad Jumps | 80m | 80m | Split between partners |
| Rowing | 1,000m | 1,000m | Split between partners |
| Farmers Carry | 2x24 kg, 200m | 2x16 kg, 200m | Split between partners |
| Sandbag Lunges | 20 kg, 100m | 10 kg, 100m | Split between partners |
| Wall Balls | 100 reps (6 kg) | 75 reps (6 kg) | Split between partners |
Key rules:
- Partners alternate every running segment and every station. You cannot do two consecutive segments.
- The exact split of station work (e.g., 50/50 or 60/40 on wall balls) is decided by the team.
- Both athletes must be present at the transition area for handoffs.
- Doubles is available as Same-Sex Doubles (both men or both women) or Mixed Doubles (one man, one woman).
Who It's For
- First-time HYROX® athletes: Doubles halves the individual workload, making the race approachable for beginners. Running 4 x 1 km instead of 8 x 1 km and splitting stations is significantly less daunting.
- Training partners: Friends, spouses, or gym buddies who want a shared race experience.
- Athletes building toward individual HYROX®: Many athletes race Doubles first, then progress to HYROX® Open or HYROX® Pro as their fitness develops.
- Competitive teams: Experienced pairs can produce fast times by strategically dividing work based on each partner's strengths.
Typical Doubles finish times range from 55-80 minutes for competitive teams to 90-120 minutes for recreational pairs.
HYROX® Context
HYROX® Doubles is consistently one of the most popular divisions at every race event, often selling out before individual spots. The format lowers the barrier to entry while maintaining the full HYROX® atmosphere -- the Roxzone, the running lanes, and all 8 stations.
Strategically, the strongest Doubles teams play to each partner's strengths. A pair might have one partner handle the majority of sled work while the other dominates the rowing and SkiErg. Communication during transitions and pre-planned station splits are key performance differentiators.
Doubles teams can qualify for the HYROX® World Championships in the Doubles category, making it a legitimate competitive pathway. For a deeper look at strategy and training, see the HYROX® Doubles guide.
FAQ
Can my partner and I split the work however we want? You must alternate running segments (Partner A runs km 1, Partner B runs km 2, etc.). For stations, both partners participate but can divide the reps or distance however they choose -- 50/50, 60/40, or any other split.
What is the difference between Same-Sex Doubles and Mixed Doubles? Same-Sex Doubles pairs two men or two women. Mixed Doubles pairs one man and one woman. Mixed Doubles uses the men's weights for the male partner's turns and women's weights for the female partner's turns at applicable stations.
Is Doubles easier than individual HYROX®? The total workload is similar, but it is split between two people, so each athlete does roughly half the running and half the station work. The rest periods between running segments and stations are also built in, making it significantly more manageable than a solo race.
