Definition
Same-Sex Doubles is a HYROX® Doubles format where both team members are the same gender -- either two men or two women. The pair alternates running segments and shares the 8 workout stations, with both athletes using the same station weights throughout the race. Same-Sex Doubles provides a straightforward team competition format with uniform weights for both partners.
Requirements & Standards
Both athletes use the HYROX® Open weights for their gender. Since both partners are the same gender, there is no weight variation between turns.

Key rules:
- Partners must alternate every running segment.
- Station work can be split in any proportion -- 50/50, 60/40, or any other arrangement the team decides.
- Both athletes use identical weights at every station (since they are the same gender).
- Both athletes must be present at handoff points in the transition area.
Who It's For
- Training partners of the same gender: Gym buddies, running partners, or friends who train together regularly.
- Competitive same-gender pairs: Athletes who want to race against other teams of the same gender composition for a fair competitive comparison.
- First-time HYROX® participants: Like all Doubles formats, the shared workload makes the race significantly more manageable than individual competition.
- Teams that want even splits: Because both partners use the same weights, it is easier to divide work 50/50 and maintain even pacing.
Typical finish times: Men's Same-Sex Doubles: 55-80 minutes competitive, 80-100 minutes recreational. Women's Same-Sex Doubles: 60-85 minutes competitive, 85-110 minutes recreational.
HYROX® Context
Same-Sex Doubles competes on a separate leaderboard from Mixed Doubles, ensuring fair competition. The men's Same-Sex leaderboard and women's Same-Sex leaderboard are ranked independently.
The strategic advantage of Same-Sex Doubles compared to Mixed Doubles is simplicity: both partners use the same weights, so equipment does not need to be adjusted between turns. This can save transition time, particularly on stations like the sled push where changing weight plates takes time. In practice, the time difference is small, but competitive teams optimize every second.
Common strategic approaches:
- Balanced pairs: Split everything 50/50 for even fatigue management.
- Specialist pairs: Give more sled and carry work to the stronger partner and more running to the faster partner.
- Runner-heavy strategy: Have the faster runner take all the "hard" running legs (e.g., the runs following the sled stations when fatigue is highest).
Same-Sex Doubles teams can qualify for the HYROX® World Championships. For Doubles training and race strategy, see the HYROX® Doubles guide.
FAQ
What is the difference between Same-Sex Doubles and Mixed Doubles? The race format is identical. The only difference is team composition: Same-Sex has two athletes of the same gender using identical weights, while Mixed Doubles has one man and one woman using gender-appropriate weights.
Can two athletes of different fitness levels race Same-Sex Doubles together? Absolutely. The flexible station splitting means a stronger athlete can take a larger share of the workload. For example, one partner might do 60% of the sled push distance and 60% of the rowing meters while the other handles more of the lunges and wall balls.
Is Same-Sex Doubles ranked separately from Mixed Doubles? Yes. Men's Same-Sex Doubles, Women's Same-Sex Doubles, and Mixed Doubles each have their own leaderboard and ranking. Podiums and World Championship qualification are separate for each category.
