A start format where athletes within a wave begin at short intervals rather than simultaneously.

A Rolling Start is a HYROX start format where athletes within a wave are released at short intervals rather than simultaneously. This reduces congestion and ensures individual chip timing accuracy.

Definition

A Rolling Start is a start format used in HYROX® races where athletes within a wave begin at short intervals (typically every few seconds) rather than all starting simultaneously from a single start line. This format reduces congestion on the running lanes and at workout stations, improving the race experience and ensuring more accurate individual timing.

How It Works

In a rolling start, athletes line up in their assigned wave and are released individually or in small groups at staggered intervals:

  1. Athletes check in at the start corral for their assigned wave time
  2. Officials release athletes one at a time or in pairs, typically every 5-10 seconds
  3. Each athlete's chip timing begins when they cross the start timing mat
  4. Individual timing means each athlete races against the clock, not against the group

This contrasts with a mass start where an entire wave begins simultaneously, which can cause bottlenecks at the first station. The rolling start ensures:

  • Smoother flow through the first running segment
  • Reduced crowding at Station 1 (SkiErg)
  • More space on running lanes throughout the race
  • More equitable access to shared equipment like rowers and SkiErgs

Rules & Regulations

  • Athletes must start within their assigned wave window. Starting with a different wave without authorization results in disqualification.
  • Timing begins when the athlete crosses the start mat, not when the wave officially begins.
  • Athletes may not delay their start to gain a tactical advantage (e.g., waiting for stations to clear).
  • The interval between athletes is set by race officials and is consistent within each wave.
  • Athletes starting later in the rolling sequence race on equal timing terms with those who started earlier since all times are chip-based.

Why It Matters for HYROX® Athletes

  • Fair timing. Rolling starts ensure your overall time reflects your individual performance rather than being affected by mass-start congestion.
  • Reduced station waiting. With athletes spread across the course, the likelihood of waiting for equipment at busy stations is reduced.
  • Better pacing. Without the adrenaline of a mass start, athletes are less likely to go out too fast in the opening kilometer.
  • Course management. Athletes encounter fewer competitors on the running lanes, allowing for cleaner lines and more consistent pacing.

Tips & Strategy

  1. Start at your own pace. Resist the urge to sprint off the line. Your timing is individual, so settle into your planned race pace immediately.
  2. Do not rush to beat others to stations. Since timing is chip-based, arriving at a station 5 seconds after another athlete does not cost you anything on the clock.
  3. Use the warm-up time wisely. With rolling starts, your exact start moment may be a few minutes after you expected. Stay warm and focused in the warm-up area until your number is called.
  4. Know your position. If you are starting toward the end of the rolling sequence, expect to encounter athletes from earlier in your wave on the course. Navigate around them calmly.

FAQ

Does my start position in the rolling order affect my time? No. Since timing is chip-based, your time reflects only your individual performance from the moment you cross the start mat to the moment you cross the finish line.

How long does a rolling start take for an entire wave? A full wave typically takes 3-10 minutes to release all athletes, depending on wave size and the interval between starts.

Can I choose my position in the rolling start order? Generally, no. Start order within a wave is determined by race officials, often based on bib number or check-in sequence.
