Definition
HYROX® is a global fitness racing series that combines running with functional workout stations in a standardized indoor format. Every HYROX® race follows the same structure: 8 x 1 km running segments alternated with 8 functional workout stations, completed in sequence for time. Founded in 2017 in Hamburg, Germany, HYROX® has grown into the world's largest mass-participation fitness race, held in over 30 cities across multiple continents.
How It Works
Every HYROX® race follows an identical format regardless of location:
- Run 1 km then complete Station 1: SkiErg (1,000m)
- Run 1 km then complete Station 2: Sled Push (50m)
- Run 1 km then complete Station 3: Sled Pull (50m)
- Run 1 km then complete Station 4: Burpee Broad Jumps (80m)
- Run 1 km then complete Station 5: Rowing (1,000m)
- Run 1 km then complete Station 6: Farmers Carry (200m)
- Run 1 km then complete Station 7: Sandbag Lunges (100m)
- Run 1 km then complete Station 8: Wall Balls (75-100 reps)
Athletes start in waves, typically with a rolling start format. The race takes place entirely indoors in large arenas or exhibition halls. All running occurs on running lanes within the venue, and athletes move through the Roxzone and transition areas between runs and stations.
Divisions include Open, Pro, Elite, Doubles, and Relay, each with different weight standards for station equipment.
Rules & Regulations
- All 8 stations must be completed in order. Skipping a station results in disqualification.
- Station work must meet prescribed standards (e.g., Wall Ball must hit the target line, Sled must cross the finish mark). Failure to meet standards results in a penalty loop of approximately 100-200m.
- The time cap is 4 hours. Athletes who exceed this are recorded as DNF.
- External assistance is not permitted during the race.
- Athletes must wear their race bib with timing chip at all times.
- Equipment weights vary by division and gender.
Why It Matters for HYROX® Athletes
HYROX® has established itself as the competitive standard for hybrid athletes - those who train for both endurance and functional strength. The standardized format means:
- Every race is directly comparable. Your time in Chicago is measured against the same course as your time in London.
- There is a clear competitive pathway. From Open to Pro to Elite to World Championships, athletes can progress through divisions based on performance.
- Training is focused. Unlike obstacle course races or CrossFit competitions, the HYROX® format is known in advance, allowing athletes to train specifically for every station and distance.
- Community is global. With events worldwide, HYROX® has built one of the largest fitness communities on the planet.
Tips & Strategy
- Respect the running. The 8 km of total running accounts for 45-55% of most athletes' overall time. Do not neglect run training in favor of station work.
- Pace conservatively early. The first 3-4 stations feel manageable. The race truly begins at Station 5 (Rowing). Save energy for the back half.
- Train transitions. Moving efficiently between runs and stations saves 2-5 minutes that require zero additional fitness.
- Know the equipment. Train on Concept2 rowers and SkiErgs, competition-weight sleds, and regulation wall balls.
- Race your own race. HYROX® rewards consistent pacing over aggressive starts. Ignore what athletes around you are doing in the first half.
