The identification number worn by athletes during a HYROX event, used for timing and tracking.

A Race Bib is the numbered identification garment with an integrated timing chip worn by every HYROX athlete. It records splits at every checkpoint and is essential for official results.

Definition

A Race Bib is the numbered identification garment worn by every athlete during a HYROX® event. It contains the athlete's unique race number and an integrated timing chip that records splits at every checkpoint throughout the race. The bib is essential for accurate timing, identification, and official results recording.

How It Works

Race bibs are distributed at the event's check-in area, typically on race day or the day before. Each bib includes:

  • Unique race number - identifies the athlete in results and photography systems
  • Timing chip - an RFID or similar chip embedded in the bib that activates timing mats placed at the start line, each station entry/exit, and the finish line
  • Wave start information - indicates the athlete's assigned wave and start time
  • Division identifier - shows whether the athlete is competing in Open, Pro, Elite, or another division

As athletes cross each timing mat, the chip records the exact time, enabling the calculation of running splits, station splits, and transition times.

Bibs must be worn on the front of the torso, clearly visible, and must not be folded, covered, or altered in any way that might obstruct the timing chip or race number.

Rules & Regulations

  • Bibs are non-transferable. Only the registered athlete may use their assigned bib.
  • The bib must be worn on the front of the body at all times during the race.
  • Folding, cutting, or modifying the bib is prohibited as it may damage the timing chip.
  • Athletes without a functioning bib will not receive official results.
  • Lost or damaged bibs should be reported to race officials immediately for a replacement.
  • Bibs typically include safety pins for attachment; some athletes use bib belts or magnetic holders.

Why It Matters for HYROX® Athletes

  • Accurate timing. Without a functioning bib chip, none of your splits, station times, or overall time will be recorded.
  • Results and ranking. Your bib number links to your athlete profile in the HYROX® results system, feeding your ranking and season results.
  • Photography. Race photographers use bib numbers to tag and organize photos, making it easy to find your images post-race.
  • Safety identification. In case of a medical event, the bib number allows race officials to quickly identify the athlete and access emergency contact information.

Tips & Strategy

  1. Test your bib attachment before the race. Pin it securely in 4 corners or use a bib belt. A loose bib that flaps can be distracting and may interfere with station work.
  2. Do not cover the timing chip area. If wearing a vest or hydration pack, ensure it does not sit over the bib chip. This can block timing mat readings.
  3. Collect your bib early. If early pickup is available, use it to avoid race-morning queues and reduce stress.
  4. Write your split targets on the bib. Some athletes use a marker to write pacing reminders directly on their bib for quick reference during the race.

FAQ

Can I pick up my race bib on race morning? Yes, most HYROX® events offer race-morning pickup. However, arriving early is recommended to avoid lines and ensure time for warm-up.

What if my timing chip does not work? If you notice missing splits after the race, contact race officials. HYROX® has backup timing systems and can often reconstruct results from video and manual checkpoints.

Can I use a bib belt instead of safety pins? Yes. Many athletes prefer magnetic bib holders or elastic bib belts for comfort. Just ensure the bib sits flat on your chest without folding.
